New SAP technology brings 'bracketology' to NHL -

While “bracketology” is a term most sports fans associate with college basketball, the NHL and SAP are partnering to bring a similar game to hockey. This year, the most passionate sports fans will be able to predict all the NHL playoff series through the Stanley Cup Final in a contest for prizes and bragging rights. will be powered by SAP’s match-up insights, allowing fans to have all the data at their hands to make accurate predictions. This is the latest activation in a long-term, strategic partnership between SAP and the NHL.

“As the official cloud software partner of the NHL, SAP is continuously looking for ways to help the league use technology to simplify the fan experience with cutting-edge solutions including the SAP HANA® Enterprise Cloud,” said Chris Burton, VP of Global Sponsorships at SAP. “The start of the partnership included a revamp and redesign of, providing fans a completely new look and feel to the site and opportunities to unlock new statistics. The Match-up Analysis Tool is the latest advancement that SAP is bringing to the League in efforts to continue to enhance the fan experience and bring fans closer to the sport and their favorite players and teams in new ways.”

Pretty much every professional sports league has made strategic investments and partnerships that are designed to reach millennial fans in the coming years. In this case, the NHL is betting big on numbers and statistics.

“While our technology appeals to all fans of hockey, we've found that younger fans are particularly known to be very interested in stats and data that brings them closer to their favorite teams and players,” Burton said. “This is why everything we’re doing with the NHL from the to the latest Match-up Analysis is specifically designed with younger audiences in mind. A multi-dimensional experience including access across digital / mobile is a key element to successfully reach this fickle and tech savvy audience.”

SAP’s new match-up analysis features advanced predictive analytics the break down each series on a model that uses 37 variables, including road record, goals against per game, penalty kill percentage, points percentage, shot attempts percentage behind, and many more. The Match-up Analysis is just one of several new statistical features powered by the SAP HANA® Enterprise Cloud service available at and all Playoffs Series pages that will give fans extensive resources to complete their brackets.
