The primary function of this job is to drive profitable sales of gases and equipment at the region level in the life sciences and medical markets. The main duties will be to target specific geographic customers in these market segments and promote Airgas product offerings. Feeding the pipeline, planning, development, customer support, and implementation of training to inside/outside retail and sales associates is critical. The execution of individual strategic and tactical marketing plans will be a major requirement. This is a tactical (hands on) position requiring significant travel within the region. Direct a staff of sales specialists. The position will report to the Region President.


• In conjunction with other members of the regional executive team, develop a strategy to grow the life sciences and medical business that includes identification of market potential, competitive advantages, resource requirements and tactics for developing and expanding sales.

• Feed the sales pipe line. Lead the process of identifying and establishing qualification of key prospective specialty gas and chemical accounts.

• Lead and direct the life science and medical sales team and process. Proactively evaluate, analyze, and propose solutions to potential Airgas customers.

• Close business. Drive gas core product & niche products sales volume in identified strategic market segments.

• Assure clear and collaborative communication with team members in the areas, districts and bulk organizations.

• Train, motivate, and support the sales associates to identify, maintain, and grow specialty gas business.

• Serve as a sales & technical resource to local area sales managers and representatives.

• Establish and maintain good customer relations at key influencers (i.e., OEMs, A&E firms, trade groups etc) accounts to grow sales.

• Provide technical application, technical, and safety training to customers and Airgas employees.

• Participate in the development and presentation of customer or Airgas seminars and customer solutions.

• Manage the financial success of the product line within the area, with direct accountability for gross margin, service level and meeting budgeted business objectives,

• Ability to work independently under pressure and effectively prioritize multiple tasks.

• Other duties and projects as assigned.

• Ability to occasionally lift 25 to 75 lb.

• Occasional bending, stooping, crouching, reaching, grasping, feeling and repetitive motion required.

• Ability to perform work doing occasional climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and finger activities.

• Must be able to occasionally work outdoors in temperatures ranging from -10 to over 100 degrees.

• Talk to and hear customers/co-workers as well as smell/hear leaking gas from cylinders.

• Ability to set goals and motivate self and others to achieve these goals.

• Extensive technical & value proposition knowledge for FDA and medical grade gases (pure gases, gas mixtures and gas applications), chemicals, and equipment in key market segments of Pharma/BioTech, Universities, Hospitals and Medical facilities.

• College degree (or equivalent) with significant technical &/or business background. MBA a plus.

• Working knowledge of purity and production requirements which meet necessary application requirements.

• Able to develop, present and deliver on cohesive business, sales and marketing plans.

• Strong negotiating skills.

• Able to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and/or government regulations.

• Able to write reports, sales presentations, business correspondence, proposals and procedure manuals.

• Able to effectively analyze and present information and training and to be able to respond to questions from groups in a business setting.

• SAP system experience and skills helpful.

• Strong computer literacy required, including Microsoft office business platforms.

• Able to solve practical problems and deal with a mixture of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

• Able to interpret instructions furnished in oral, written, diagram or schedule form.

• Able to drive or have access to transportation.

• Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work successfully as part of a team.

• Past experience in a marketing role or in developing marketing programs and materials.

• Past record of achieving significant sales growth.

• Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.

• Basic understanding of business and accounting concepts including but not limited to Return on Investment, P& L statements, balance sheets, interest and leasing calculations, and margin responsibilities.

• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
