German software maker SAP March 17 debuted HanaHaus, a new 15,000-sq.-ft. café and community workspace in Palo Alto, Calif., designed to foster technological innovation.

Palo Alto-based Sanjay Shirolé, Indian American vice president and global head of HanaHaus at SAP, told AP that the café will function as a sort of community center, with free seating for anyone who buys coffee or food.

In addition, SAP will provide an auditorium and rentable work space for groups or individuals who want to reserve seats for extended periods of time.

The café is housed in one of the most historic buildings in Palo Alto, the Varsity Theater at 456 University Avenue.

Shirolé said there is also a “tech desk” for SAP engineers, entrepreneurs and independent consultants to offer free advice on software design or other topics. The site can host workshops, how-to sessions, hackathons and musical performances and other events.

SAP has contracted with Blue Bottle Coffee to offer coffee and teas, baked goods and items for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

HanaHaus was initiated by SAP Board chairman Hasso Plattner. “HanaHaus is not just a physical space,” he said. “Our goal is to create a sense of community, along with a culture that actively fosters creativity, connection and collaboration.”

“We’re thrilled SAP is opening HanaHaus in our community,” said Palo Alto Mayor Karen Holman. “It is a reflection of Palo Alto as both a steward of the past and an entrepreneur for the future.”

While the café doesn’t display SAP’s logo, the name HanaHaus comes from the company's flagship database product, HANA.

Before joining SAP, Shirolé spent more than 15 years as an entrepreneur, successfully founding and leading two software startups in Silicon Valley, including Xora, a global leader in mobile, cloud-based workforce management solutions.
