Position Title: Continuous Improvement Engineer

Summary : This position will act as an agent of change for TIMET and will execute the following: Implement process improvements (internal and external) to improve TIMET safety, quality, cost and on-time delivery goals utilizing Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing Methodologies and Tools. Projects will require a cost justification, project plans and timely focused project execution resulting in measurable, sustained business improvements. At all times conduct business in a safe, ethical and professional manner.


Principle Responsibilities:

1. Lead Process Improvement Projects that support TIMET goals to improve safety, quality, cost, and on-time delivery:

• Utilize the Lean Six Sigma DMAIC approach to problem solving and process improvement.

• Utilize data to drive improvements and implement control plans to sustain those improvements.

• Lead project meetings and ensure an open flow of communication and information across the organization.

• Identify improvements in equipment, processes, or inspection technologies necessary to assure satisfactory process capability and achieve cost improvements.

• Prepare process scopes for significant process changes and participate in CEP implementation teams.

• Working with Accounting to define and measure cost savings.

• Support other Continuous Improvement Projects as required


2. Implement Lean Manufacturing and Visual Factory:

• Implement visual factory including 5S, SOP’s, SPC monitoring, and Performance Metric Tracking.

• Implement Lean Manufacturing techniques to remove waste from processes.


3. Provide Continuous Improvement Training:

• Train plant personnel in the Six Sigma and Lean methodologies.

• Assist in the development and implementation of operational department training material.

• Provide Technical Support for Toronto Operations, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Departments.


4. Provide Continuous Improvement Leadership:

• Provide leadership in the project selection process.

• Present regular reports and drive projects to completion within assigned deadlines.

• Implement the appropriate metrics and associated data collection to drive improvements.

• Educate personnel in Continuous Improvement and Cost Reduction.

• Facilitate communication and achievement of company and plant goals and objectives.


Additional Responsibilities:


• Work with other TIMET locations on process improvement initiatives as required.

• Utilize Access databases and Excel Worksheets as required.

• Utilize SAP to obtain information to support improvement initiatives.

• Attend training classes and seminars to learn improvement methodologies and to enhance technical skills.


Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• Project Management experience and the ability to successfully close out time dependent programs.

• Strong facilitation, communication, and presentation skills.

• Experience in Primary Metals Finishing Operations, Maintenance or Engineering (flatroll and forged products)

• The ability to organize and manage multiple projects.

• Problem analysis and problem resolution at both a strategic and functional level.

• Desire to spend considerable amount of time working on shop floor with operators.

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

• SPC and Six Sigma Experience.

• A comprehensive level of computer literacy in order to handle the high demand for technical authoring, procedural documentation, reporting and analysis.

• Strong quantitative and analytical skills.

• Flexible/adaptable; able to work with diverse groups of people and in many different situations.

• High performance teams and a strong team player.

Education/Experience Requirements:


• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Metallurgy, Material Science, or Industrial Engineer (an equivalent amount of relevant work experience may also be considered).

• Computer Proficiency, MS Office preferred.

• Experience with forging and rolling of metal a plus

• Experience with SAP a plus

• Three to Five years metals experience preferred.

• Experience with Minitab a plus


Physical Requirements: Ability to work in an industrial surrounding.

Environment: Office and industrial plants
