And the league is doing so in partnership with business software
giant SAP -- whose co-founder, Hasso Plattner, is the Sharks majority owner -- as the provider of the technology and design that enables the move.
The new categories available [now] at NHL.com show everything from total shot attempts -- previously known as Corsi, but not in the NHL's package -- to penalties taken and penalties drawn. Later phases of the stats will have visualization features that show, for example, a goalies-eye view of where shots come from and what the save percentage is in each area.
"It's all about being able to tell stories of our players," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in a press conference timed to Saturday's outdoor game at Levi's Stadium between the Sharks and Los Angeles Kings. "And SAP will provide the foundation, the cornerstone for it all to happen."
The business giant, whose name appears on the Sharks home rink, is officially the league's "cloud software partner."
In some ways, this may be giving fans, either now or down the road, access to some of the data already used by the Sharks and other teams. San Jose is cited as one of the fore-runners in use of advanced stats and general manager Doug Wilson noted in December that "I work for a company that has some great technology and platforms that are very powerful."
