Position Purpose

The “Software Development Manager, BI & Big Data” is responsible for leading a team of 15+ BI & Big Data developers in taking the Un-carrier approach to our Business Intelligence systems, and mobile data reporting for business groups across the enterprise. Empower the business by providing them with the latest intelligence in the best visual formats at their fingertips on all devices. Defines and maintains development and technology standards and best practices for applications, projects, middleware, and databases including both in-house development as well as third-party applications. Partners with Peer Managers, Technical Architects, Solutions Architects and Data Architects, Corporate Information Security team members to meet technical design, development and security standards while delivering the latest BI & Big Data technology solutions empowering the business. Provide guidance and direction to developers to ensure compliance with the standards and best practices.

  • Business Intelligence (BI) (Hadoop, Teradata, Microsoft BI technologies, Tableau, Business Objects)

Position Duties and Responsibilities

  • Customer focus, change & innovation, strategic thinking, relationship building & influencing, talent management, results focus and inspirational leadership.

  • Expert level data modeling and ETL skills, metadata management & data quality concepts, knowledge of industry best practices, and a deep understanding how data is extracted, transformed, scrubbed and loaded in a large DW environment with data originating from many source systems.

  • Monitor and measure work tasks to ensure deliverables are provided on time and within budget

  • Manage technical relationships with assigned vendors, including driving features and function requests for inclusion in future product releases.

  • Partner with Business Solutions to define handoff processes required for BI & Big Data developers on functional specification documents and high level solution architecture diagrams

  • Focus on light weight SDLC.

  • Lead and guide a group of 15+ developers delivering solutions for multiple BI & Big Data projects.

  • Research emerging technologies in BI & Big Data to keep IT ahead of the pack and always delivering the latest technologies to the business.

  • Enable and empower the development team to maintain documents that include BI development best practices, data models, and guidelines for code frameworks.

  • Deliver better & more sustainable software solutions (through strong collaboration, asking hard questions, applying architectural patterns, whole systems thinking, best practices)

Position Requirements

Functional/Technical Skills:

  • 8 to 10 years of software development experience.

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience managing or supervising a team of 15 developers or more. (Onshore and Offshore)

  • 2+ years of Software Development & Management on Hadoop ecosystem (Hive/Pig, Oozie, Sqoop, Flume, Zookeeper, HDFS, HBase, NoSQL databases etc.)

  • 3+ years of experience on managing BI, Data warehousing & Real time Data Integration software development teams.

  • Familiarity with Hortonworks HDP platform with HDP 2.1 and Yarn.

  • Strong Application development background using Java/J2EE Stack or other programming languages.

  • Strong database, SQL, ETL development and data analysis skills including knowledge on best practices for scaling, performance and scheduling ETL jobs.

  • Knowledge on SQL, J2EE, JMS, TIBCO, SAP HANA, Web Services (SOAP, REST), Databases (RDBMS, In-Memory & NoSQL)

  • Experience with Teradata is a plus

  • Excellent leadership and mentorship skills

  • Knowledge of Business Intelligence Reporting Systems (Business Objects, Microsoft, Power Pivot, etc.)

  • Strong working knowledge of Big Data, Data Warehousing, Data Mart, and BI reporting concepts

  • Solid knowledge of Architecture Best Practices and software development methodologies

  • Excellent analysis and synthesis skills along with strong written and verbal communication skills


  • Minimum 3 years as a Software Development Manager.

  • Previous Telecom and Retail Experience is highly desirable

Educational/Vocational Training:

  • Minimum Required 4-year degree in computer science or related discipline.

  • Technology certifications (such as Hadoop/HDP, Java, Microsoft, Oracle, Teradata) a plus
