SAN JOSE -- Fire crews knocked down a Monday evening blaze at a cluttered yard on Julian Street near the county housing authority and the SAP Center, according to officials.

The one-alarm fire was reported at 5:23 p.m. and the brunt of it was quickly extinguished, although crews remained at the scene into the night mopping up smoldering hot spots, said San Jose fire spokesman Capt. Cleo Doss. Crews initially had "access issues" in getting to the blaze, which broke out in a yard stocked with building materials, stacks of vehicles and a number of structures with corrugated metal roofs. Black smoke could be seen rising from the site due to burning tires, Doss said. He called it an "overhaul nightmare."

One firefighter suffered minor injuries and transported himself to the hospital as a precaution, Doss said.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
