SAP's Kevin Chew Talks In-Memory Analytics and Business Value at Oracle ... - SiliconANGLE (blog)

@ a< href="http://sap.rssfeeds.pw">Sap RSS News

During his stint as a Venture Investor at EMC, Kevin Chew tracked cloud computing and Big Data as they began to take root in Silicon Valley. Now the group vice president of Managed Cloud as a Service and Technology Alliances for SAP, Chew is responsible for helping customers and partners leverage these technologies to boost the bottom line.

The veteran executive stopped by theCUBE at the recently concluded Oracle OpenWorld 2013 conference to discuss how SAP is addressing the changing landscape of corporate IT. Where Oracle is aiming to dominate the entire stack, the BI giant is pursuing an ecosystem-oriented strategy that relies on partners for storage, networking and other infrastructure components. Chew explains that these are “areas where SAP will probably never go [because] SAP at its core DNA is an applications company and now a database and middleware company.”

Asked about his firm’s recent investment in enterprise hosting provider Virtustream, Chew says that the move underscores plans to make enterprise applications portable across the private, public and hybrid cloud. Popularizing the HANA in-memory database is another top priority that was recently brought to light by the announcement of the In-Memory Option enhancement for Oracle Enterprise 12c.

Chew highlights that unlike 12c and other rivaling offerings, which are built on “antiquated” technology, HANA is specifically designed to process transactions and analytical workloads in-memory. Furthermore, the platform integrates with SAP applications, a major technological advantage that he says will persist as apps move closer to the database layer. This trend is expected to accelerate as converged infrastructure solutions continue to gain traction among enterprises.

Watch the video below for the full highlights from the interview, including more details about Chew’s work for SAP.

Memorandum of Understanding Signed between WFT Cloud and PSGIM for ... - PR Web (press release)

@ a< href="http://sap.rssfeeds.pw">Sap RSS News

(PRWEB) September 30, 2013

Wharfedale Technologies Inc., (WFT Cloud) a global leader in enterprise SAP Cloud solutions, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the 22nd of July 2013 with PSGIM for imparting training on SAP modules, through cloud model. This SAP training would add value to their employable skills. Students can get trained at their own pace and practice from their rooms, at an affordable and reasonable cost.

PSGIM is one of the 23 institutions run by the PSG & Sons’ Charities Trust, a pioneering champion of quality education. Over the last 86 years, the institution has helped to educate over 300,000 students in several disciplines. PSG IM started off in 1966 as the Department of Management Sciences at the PSG College of Technology. PSG Tech is renowned in its own right and has alumni in esteemed positions all over the world. By 1995, PSGIM had evolved into a full-fledged, autonomous management institute, affiliated to the Anna University of Tamil Nadu. Today, the institution offers full time and part time MBA programs in Management, PG Diploma in Management and Doctoral Program in Management.

The MOU was signed by Mr.Ganesh Radhakrishnan, CEO, of WFT Cloud, USA and Dr.R.Nandagopal, Director, PSGIM. This SAP training would support MBA students of PSGIM to become SMART MANAGERS. SAP has already been running both cloud and software as a service, or SAAS, projects. With HANA in the cloud, however, SAP is moving much more into offering insight online, either directly to its customers, or as a service to end-users. The SAP training offered by WFT Cloud is a leading edge technological degree with business management. In addition, those who are successful in this course will have the strategic knowledge, insight and understanding to become a successful leader in this highly technical area. Alternatively they will have been introduced to the concept of enterprise and may opt to start their own business in the Cloud domain.

A recent Gartner survey projects a global demand of 14 million jobs by the end of 2016 with an expected market value of about $75 billion. While there is a great future potential, there is expected to be a huge gap between supply and demand to meet the needs of the market. This presents an unprecedented opportunity for the graduates of this course.

SAP Techniversity: A technical education conference for Indian students - AOL

@ a< href="http://sap.rssfeeds.pw">Sap RSS News

The second edition of SAP Techniversity, the technology event hosted by SAP India Labs, saw an enthusiastic participation by about 5,500 students from approximately 300 colleges and unversities of India here on Saturday.

The day-long event saw speakers from SAP Labs India and the company's Germany headquarters speaking on opportunities for students not only in the company but also the support they can expect for their entreprenurial forays.

The managing director of SAP Labs India, Anirban Dey said that the idea behind the event was to reach out to students even before they leave college. "It's simple, we want to make students get a feel of the real world. It's also to enable them get insights on new technology solutions happening globally," he said.

He added that such events also give young minds a chance to showcase winning ideas to existing or prospective clients.

On SAP's HANA platform that helps accelerate analytics, business processes, sentiment data processing, and predictive capabilities, Dey said that about 800 start-ups across 55 countries have built solutions using HANA. SAP has a dedicted HANA Realtime Fund for $500 million, which is in the nature of venture capital funding.

There are three applications currently in pilot mode in India using HANA, Dey said. The former chairman of Microsoft India, Ravi Venkatesan in his brief speech perked up the audience with his pep talk, often delving into his stints in various Indian and foreign companies.

"My story is one of optimism, I did what my heart asked me to do," he said, explaining why he returned from the US to join Tata Cummins in India in 1996, when it was not doing well. "I was young and foolish to join a business that was about to close."

He said that his decision to join Microsoft in 2004 and quit in 2012 was also an instance of not being influenced by advice that came from friends.

Venkatesan's advice for budding entrepreneurs was simple. "You should have the courage to take risks and never give up."

He also touched upon the scourge of Indian politics, of many politicians facing criminal charges and dominance of dynasty politics. "Politics is degenerating into family-run criminal enterprise."

On the recent controversy triggerred by the Central government's attempt to overturn a Supreme Court judgment that mandates disqualification of lawmakers convicted for a criminal offence, by moving a ordinance, Venkatesan said, "Does it get any more brazen than this?"

SAP Extends ACN Alliance, Intros Tools - Analyst Blog - NASDAQ

SAP AG ( SAP ) announced two new strategic initiatives yesterday in order to better serve its clients by improving forecasting capability and dealer management solution. However, the announcements hardly made any positive impact in the markets and the shares slipped 0.1%.

SAP launched new capabilities at the Gartner Supply Chain Executive Conference 2013 yesterday. The new capabilities, or the SAP Enterprise Demand Sensing, improve companies' demand management and business planning processes with tools that provide a real-time view of market information.

SAP Enterprise Demand Sensing comes with a real-time outlook and analysis on all market activities, which include the sentiments from social networks. Based on this, the companies will be able to sense demand and accordingly promote products. Thereafter, supply chain teams will ensure quick response to changes in demand patterns.

This new software is expected to quickly improve the quality of demand forecasts in order to reduce stock-outs, thereby lowering costs and ultimately boosting sales. This new application not only provides the current information about the market trends and activities, but also provides historical forecast trends, compares and accurately combines different forecast sources with demand analytics and describes demand by analyzing historical forecast accuracy, bias and intermittency trends.

Therefore, through the launch of SAP Enterprise Demand Sensing, the company now puts forward a complete, end-to-end demand management solution to facilitate demand-driven supply chains. SAP Enterprise Demand Sensing perfectly complements the existing Demand Signal Management application and SAP Advanced Planning and optimization component.

In addition, on the same day, SAP and Accenture Plc. ( ACN ) expanded their global alliance through a reseller agreement, whereby Accenture will deliver a comprehensive dealer management solution for the dealer network of a heavy-equipment manufacturing company. The solution will help dealers operate their businesses more effectively through industry-leading capabilities including mobility for field sales and service personnel and improved business intelligence.

Accenture will act as a global value-added reseller (VAR) and it will be the single point of contact to deliver both its technology services and SAP products under a single structure directly to Accenture clients. The dealer management solution will comprise SAP software that Accenture will configure depending on the dealers' use cases, by integrating industry best practices for analytics, finance, sales, parts and service.

Prior to this, SAP and Hortonworks had entered an agreement whereby SAP will be reselling the latter's Data Platform (HDP) to its customers. Through this reseller agreement SAP will deliver a complete Enterprise Architecture leveraging the industry's first 100% open source data platform powered by Apache Hadoop.

These strategic initiatives come at an opportune time as the global competitive pressure is severely pushing the companies to transform and upgrade their supply chains in order to become more demand-driven/market-driven. Today, supply chain professionals and the marketing force need to have more integration in terms of work than ever before to generate value for their customers, thereby improving their business efficiency.

SAP seeks to position itself as the market leader against software giants like Oracle Corp. ( ORCL ) and IBM Corp. ( IBM ). According to market research firm Gartner, worldwide enterprise IT spending is expected to be $3.6 trillion in 2013.

Spending on enterprise software is expected to increase more than 6.0% to $304.0 billion, driven by higher spending on database management systems. Therefore, with innovations such as these, SAP can clearly benefit from the increased spending in the IT industry.

SAP currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).

First batch of SAP-ITA Mawared Programme graduates - HispanicBusiness.com

@ a< href="http://sap.rssfeeds.pw">Sap RSS News

Aiming to boost graduate employ ment prospects and also to foster, empower and secure the Omani market with the best possible talents in ICT, the Information Technology Authority (ITA) and SAP, the world's largest business software company, together celebrated the graduation of the first batch that successfully finished the threemonth innovative Mawared Training Programme.

Nineteen internationally certified graduates out of a total of 20 were recently honoured during a cere mony held in the presence of Dr Salim Sultan Al Ruzaiqi, CEO of ITA, and Marita Mitschein, manag ing director, SAP Training & Development Institute and senior vicepresident of growth plan lead for SAP Middle East & North Africa, at the ITA headquarters.

On the occasion, Dr Ruzaiqi, said, "This training programme comes at a vital time to meet the current needs of the market in the sultanate. Supervised by SAP, the graduates of this programme are truly qualified to make their way to the private sector and in partic ular businesses utilising similar ERPbased systems. Now is the time for the private sector to endorse these talents and take them forward.

"We are aware of the market demands. A second batch of the same programme has already been planned and will start in early November. This is a growing and promising market, not only in the region but here in Oman too. There are five Omani talents who are currently working abroad in coordination with SAP. It is time to bring them back and start appreci ating our local capabilities."

On her part, Marita said, "We are so proud of these young Omani graduates who have successfully completed the SAP Mawared Programme." Explaining the nature of the programme, she said, "An SAP certification is the ideal way for businesses to assess and verify that consultants have the required skills to effectively imple ment and operate SAP solutions. An estimated 80 per cent of the top 1,000 companies ranked by Forbes run on SAP, and the SAP Mawared Programme for young local professionals has a clear objective to support local and global businesses operating in the region to achieve new levels of success. These talented young Omani graduates have the chance to contribute in making a differ ence across industries and the economy at large."

One of the SAP Mawared Programme graduates, Aisha al Beriki, a software technology stu dent from Middle East College and recently certified SAPgraduate, said, "SAP, or System Application Product, is considered to be the first solution for ERP Enterprise Resource Planning. SAP provided us with the opportunity to enrol in an extensively rich and informative Mawared programme. During this threemonth programme, we have learnt how to balance between the two important factors of success in any organisation, which are time and money. We have also been pro vided with accurate and specific data to do with resource planning and structuring. Among many other interesting parts of the train ing, we have also covered business and financial accounting methods and operations."

This programme followed an MoU between ITA and SAP to enable both parties to collab orate on plans to improve the Mawared Programme's effective ness across the sultanate, including the potential to subsidise addition al students.

Siemens Appoints a Director From SAP - New York Times

@ a< href="http://sap.rssfeeds.pw">Sap RSS News

FRANKFURT — The German engineering company Siemens is appointing the co-chief executive of the business software maker SAP to its board to replace Josef Ackermann, who resigned after the board’s decision to push out the company’s chief executive, Peter Löscher.

The appointment was one of several changes in top Siemens management announced on Wednesday as the company tries to move past the upheaval surrounding Mr. Löscher’s departure in July.

Mr. Ackermann, 65, will be replaced by Jim Hagemann Snabe, who remains the top executive at SAP, but has said he plans to leave that post next year for a seat on that company’s board.

Mr. Ackermann, the former head of Deutsche Bank and one of Germany’s best-known business figures, left the Siemens board last week, citing “questions of style and fairness” in the company’s dealings after the board had Mr. Löscher removed. German news reports said Mr. Ackermann had opposed the board’s decision to oust Mr. Löscher and replace him with Joe Kaeser, then the company’s chief financial officer, after Siemens missed several profit targets.

On Wednesday, Siemens named Ralf P. Thomas to succeed Mr. Kaeser as chief financial officer. Mr. Thomas has been the finance chief of the company’s industry division.

Siemens is a pillar of the German economy, and its boardroom turmoil drew the attention of Chancellor Angela Merkel, who thought it was important for the company to “return to calm waters,” according to her spokesman. The company, based in Munich, has 370,000 employees worldwide and makes heavy-duty industrial goods, including power turbines, locomotives and medical imaging devices. It is a rival to General Electric.

The chairman of the Siemens board, Gerhard Cromme, said Mr. Snabe, 47, would bring knowledge of software and computer technology.

“In view of the growing strategic importance of digitalization for Siemens’s core businesses, we are adding to the technology and software competence of the supervisory board,” Mr. Cromme said in a statement. “We are gaining an internationally respected expert in this area.”

SAP targets 1M small and medium-sized business customers in China - South China Morning Post

@ a< href="http://sap.rssfeeds.pw">Sap RSS News

In July, Jim Hagemann Snabe said he would relinquish his role as co-chief executive at SAP, the world's leading supplier of business management software, to serve as a member of the German company's supervisory board.

"After more than 20 years with SAP, I have decided that it is time for me to begin the next phase of my career, closer to my family," Snabe said at the time.

The supervisory board has proposed his election to the body during the company's annual general meeting of shareholders in May next year.

Snabe and Bill McDermott were named as co-chief executives in February 2010, with a mandate to strengthen relationships with customers and partners, drive SAP's innovation portfolio across all markets, and ensure operational excellence across the company.

This next phase of Snabe's career will also find him lending his expertise at the boardroom of another big German firm. Siemens, Europe's largest engineering group, appointed Snabe to its supervisory board last week.

We want to become more Chinese, rather than just a German [firm], in China

Snabe, however, remains focused on SAP, where he has held management roles in consulting, sales and development since 1990. He started as a consultant with SAP Denmark, briefly moved to IBM Denmark in 1994 and rejoined SAP in 1996. He was also responsible for the design and creation of the company's flagship enterprise resource planning software, as well as solutions for financial and public services industries.

Since taking the reins at SAP, Snabe and McDermott have invested more than US$14 billion on acquisitions to build up the firm's capabilities for bigger inroads into what it estimates is an addressable global market worth about US$220 billion.

In a call with market analysts in July, Snabe said: "In 2010, we started a remarkable journey to transform the industry based on innovations in in-memory, in cloud and on the mobile."

"We anticipated then that data would move off disk into main memory [inside computers], that data centres would move off premises into a secure cloud and that users would be on the move with mobile devices. Today, we lead in all these innovation areas."

The company's fastest-growing product is Hana, its database platform used by companies to speed up analysis of information and get relevant results to conduct transactions.

Hana, which supports SAP's suite of business management software, is positioned to become a strong rival to database products from industry leader Oracle, IBM and Microsoft.

Recent acquisitions have also helped SAP, which has been operating on the mainland for about 20 years, build up its cloud computing expertise.

Despite the sluggish global economy, SAP's total revenue rose 6 per cent to €7.66 billion (HK$80 billion) in the first half of this year from €7.25 billion in the same period last year.

SAP, the world's third-biggest software company by revenue, is in the middle of a five-year, US$2 billion expansion programme on the mainland. This initiative includes opening more offices, hiring more staff, setting up research and development facilities, training more experts and consultants, and even targeting acquisitions. The number of employees has grown to 4,000 from about 2,500 last year. It also has nearly 10,000 certified consultants and 5,700 corporate customers in the market.

In a recent interview, Snabe discussed with the South China Morning Post SAP's expansion initiatives on the mainland, including an ambitious strategy to become a major information-technology supplier to about 40 million small and medium-sized enterprises in the market.

How have you moved forward with your expansion plan on the mainland amid the economic slowdown in that market?

The first year of this plan was more successful than we had expected, so we have decided to continue with our fast pace of development. We see many opportunities to innovate around Hana and mobile. You'll see us accelerating in selected areas - in particular, small and medium-sized enterprises.

We have a product called Business One which runs on Hana, which was initially deployed in 20 SMEs. We would like to increase that number to one million. Business One, which was developed by our innovation team in China and is now sold in 122 countries, provides SMEs with business automation capabilities to help them grow and become global companies.

In this mid-market segment, our typical competitors are local players. In China, these players include Kingdee and Ufida [now known as Yonyou]. Our SME agenda provides us with a strong competitive advantage because we have been helping many large firms go global for about 40 years.

We are investing to grow the number of partners with local expertise, which includes the ability to sell, help implement and support SMEs.

I believe that difficult economic situations can be a force multiplier for us. The more uncertain the market you are operating in, the more accurate you must run your company. And the more accurate you need to run your company, the more you need end-to-end business applications that help you define data in real time.

Like the cloud business, you will see this [SME] strategy take a while before it takes off. It is much more a volume business than a value market.

Do you also expect to generate demand for Business One in the mainland's public sector?

I believe that a cloud-based e-government platform, which allows citizens to interact with government services through their mobile devices, would best serve the public sector. We have very advanced e-government solutions that are used in many countries in Europe. Of course, those solutions need to be adjusted for the local environment. But that is why we have more than 1,500 developers in China.

What advantages does SAP have over the competition in the cloud computing business?

We have products that compete in four categories: My Money, which is a financial management solution; My People, which is for human resources management; My Supplier, which is a solution for interacting between buyers and sellers; and My Customer, which is customer relationship management.

Our acquisition of SuccessFactors, the largest cloud-based human resources management provider, and Ariba, which has the leading buyer-seller collaboration network, has made SAP the leader in two out of those four cloud categories.

As one of the leading cloud providers in the world, we have an ambition to build a €2 billion cloud business by 2015.

What other initiatives on the mainland will SAP drive over the next few years?

We have built up 20 years of good relationships in China. We are moving to a whole new level by taking the lead in our [information-technology] industry to pursue innovation in China. Having the SAP supervisory board meeting in Beijing is a pretty big statement of our intentions in this market. We want to become more Chinese, rather than just a German company, in China.

We have relationships with about 48 universities in China, which is important for [harnessing] skills to build mathematical libraries around Hana.

We have this enormous opportunity to look at raw data at very high speeds and use mathematical models to optimise transport, forecast demand for furniture, or analyse DNA.

SAP AG together with its subsidiaries (SAP) is engaged in developing and licensing business software solutions. SAP also sells support,...

Rimini Street broadens its narrative beyond Oracle, SAP third party support - ZDNet

@ a< href="http://sap.rssfeeds.pw">Sap RSS News

Summary: Rimini Street ultimately wants to be a support vendor for customers who have software as a service applications, on-premise software and even as a white label provider to software companies.

Rimini Street today is best known as a third party support provider for Oracle and SAP customers---and a major pain in the tuchas to those software giants---but the future narrative for the company revolves around much bigger plans.

Simply put, the storyline around Rimini is becoming more interesting as the company eyes an initial public offering probably in 2014. Rimini CEO Seth Ravin in an interview said the company wants to be a top-notch software support vendor for customers who have software as a service applications and on-premise software. Rimini could even be a white label provider to software companies.

Ravin's narrative for Rimini is notable because the one question that hangs over the company is this: What happens when most companies dump on-premise applications for the cloud? Now that transition from on-premise to the cloud will take decades, but strategically it's an issue for the company. What exactly does Rimini support in a cloud-first environment?

"We are experts at enterprise software support and most don't think of us in terms of SaaS," explained Ravin. "But SaaS companies sell premium support and we could have a play there. There's also a BPO (business process outsourcing) play too. Software companies don't do support well and we've been approached by several companies about providing support behind the scenes."

The rationale for Rimini goes like this: The company's service level agreements are better than premium support from SaaS vendors. Why not compete?

If Rimini's three-pronged plan develops it would have a compelling story in the years to come. For now, Rimini has one play and that's providing third party support for SAP and Oracle. The plan for now is to build out support for applications that round out Rimini's portfolio. For instance, Rimini on Monday said it would support Oracle's Retek licensees. Like supporting business intelligence, Rimini's latest addition acts as an enabler for more wallet share.

"Big customers are using ERP and ancillary pieces around the edges. CIOs say 'we have to give you the whole thing,'" said Ravin. "Smaller product lines may not be big moneymakers, but they allow us to take the whole deal."

In addition, Rimini has been expanding internationally. The company has resources in the U.K., Brazil, India, Australia and Japan. In Saudi Arabia, Rimini has set up contracts under Sharia law. Rimini's biggest hurdles abroad are local customers, finding people who buy into the 24/7 support culture and infrastructure such as procuring phones and telecom lines.

rimini092413 screen shot

Ravin added that in some areas such as the Middle East the main goal isn't to save money. Numerous companies just want better support so in those areas we'll lead with SLAs in our marketing.

Add it up and Rimini has been compiling the key parts to become a public company. The company added Jack Acosta, former CFO of Sybase and Portal Software, to join the board of directors and run Rimini's audit committee. Acosta is the second high profile executive hire in recent weeks. Rimini hired Daniel Winslow, a former Massachusetts representative and trial lawyer, as general counsel.

Winslow's primary task will be to defend a lawsuit that Oracle has filed against Rimini. Ravin said it's unclear when that trial will actually occur. In reality, the Oracle litigation is fading as an issue. Rimini is growing at a 40 percent clip and has 700 customers who are now providing references to more customers. Sure there, are companies that won't go with Rimini until the litigation with Oracle runs its course, but it's not like Rimini is hanging by a thread.

"We expect that the litigation will turn into a tailwind," said Ravin. "We're six times bigger now then when Oracle filed the lawsuit."

SAP Extends ACN Alliance, Intros Tools - Zacks.com

@ a< href="http://sap.rssfeeds.pw">Sap RSS News

SAP AG (SAP - Analyst Report) announced two new strategic initiatives yesterday in order to better serve its clients by improving forecasting capability and dealer management solution. However, the announcements hardly made any positive impact in the markets and the shares slipped 0.1%.

SAP launched new capabilities at the Gartner Supply Chain Executive Conference 2013 yesterday. The new capabilities, or the SAP Enterprise Demand Sensing, improve companies’ demand management and business planning processes with tools that provide a real-time view of market information.

(ACN - Snapshot Report) expanded their global alliance through a reseller agreement, whereby Accenture will deliver a comprehensive dealer management solution for the dealer network of a heavy-equipment manufacturing company.

The dealer management solution will comprise SAP software that Accenture will configure depending on the dealers’ use cases, by integrating industry best practices for analytics, finance, sales, parts and service.

Prior to this, SAP and Hortonworks had entered an agreement whereby SAP will be reselling the latter’s Data Platform (HDP) to its customers. Through this reseller agreement SAP will deliver a complete Enterprise Architecture leveraging the industry’s first 100% open source data platform powered by Apache Hadoop.

(ORCL - Analyst Report) and IBM Corp. (IBM - Analyst Report).
