Spring's late arrival in Thunder Bay has caused some problems for a local birch syrup producer.

The owner of Boreal Birch Syrup said there are still a few feet of snow up the Armstrong highway, where he taps the trees — and his tap lines are buried.

“We're setting up a whole set of new lines to accommodate that, and we'll be using a pump system far more than we ever have before,” Dave Challen said.

“Usually we collect with an ATV and a sap trailer. That's not possible this year.

Challen said he's at least a week behind schedule, but he doesn't anticipate any delays in getting his product to store shelves this year.
